Deep Rising

Blurb:
In his nine-year stint with the CIA, Jared Caldwell thought he’d seen it all. But when his latest mission instructs him to apprehend a beautiful scientist who’s allegedly linked to a devastating new form of warfare, he isn’t prepared for the prospect of battling man-made tsunamis—or the misplaced feelings he harbors for his number one suspect.

The irony of being accused of crimes her research was intended to prevent isn’t lost on Svetlana Orskya. She also didn’t expect her wish for a strong, sexy man to sweep in and change her life to come true—especially not when he appears, gun in hand, pointed at her.

But time is running out and Jared and Lana must work together to protect the mainland. As the heat between them—and the threat of mass destruction—rises there is more at stake than just their hearts.

Excerpt: Short setup

Jared pulled a cell phone from the gym bag and zipped it shut again. He dialed the phone. “We’re here,” he said. “Yes, sir. No evidence at this time.” He ended the call. His hand darted so quickly the movement subsisted as only a blur. Catching her arm, he turned her palm over.
Suddenly frightened, Lana tried to withdraw from his unrelenting hold.
“Relax,” he whispered. “I won’t hurt you. I wanted to see if your hands were healing.” He caressed her palm. “Those were some pretty nasty burns you got in Guatemala.” He traced the scabs, his fingertips whispering over her skin. “I have orders to follow if you’re involved. Don’t betray me, Lana,” he warned, in a voice so soft and gentle it made her throat burn. “There are a lot of things I might want to do with you, but causing you pain isn’t among them.”

MaddAddam

MaddAddam (MaddAddam Trilogy #3)MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had a very high expectation of this book. I loved Oryx and Crake and I loved Year of the Flood. And Atwood is one of my favorite authors hands down. So when MaddAddam came out it was a must have/must read. Now I'm like meh, ok.

With MaddAddam you have stories within stories. We get Zeb's story and the history behind the Addamites. And the Crakers get an interpretation of this history as well as their own. So it more a history about a story set in the future. O_o

I'm not sure what I was expecting. Maybe something more concerning the present time of the lives the characters are leading. I wanted more of the world building and hearing about how life was after the flood along with the adjustments of the Crakers.

I wish I had re-read either of the two that came before. There was a lot that I didn't remember. There is a synopsis at the begining of the other two but its not the same as re-reading it.

I wasn't expecting it to be wrapped up the way it was either. To avoid spoilers I will just say it was a bittersweet ending and while I understand why it had to be that way it was still sad. Overall, I am glad I finished the trilogy but am still disappointed.

Banned Book Giveaway Hop

Its time again for the Banned Books Giveaway Hop to bring attention to the growing trend of censoring books in schools and libraries. Censorship is an issue that is dear to me that I try to fight any way I can. As an adult I feel I should be able to make the choices as to what I read and as a parent I should be able to help my children make those choices. Books have been censored for many reasons: language, religion, ideas etc. But that means the ideas of a few are imposed on many. You can find more information about banned books at the American Library Association website.

Up for grabs is my copy of His Dark Materials.  This is a large book that contains all three books of this series therefore it is a US only giveaway.  Its not a requirement that you follow my blog but its always appreciated.

Through the Glass

Don't Eat The Food

ThroughGlass-BN-KoboTitle: Through Glass
Author: Rebecca Ethington
Genre: NA Dystopian
Everyone remembered the day the sky went black. The day the sun was wiped from the sky. They remember the wind as it brought in the darkness; the way the earth shook and everything changed.
Everyone remembered the screams as the darkness ate those who were out in the open, those who had surrounded themselves by light, and those who made noise.

Everyone remembered the voice from the sky and the way food disappeared.

At least, that’s what I hoped. I hoped that there was an ‘everyone’ that would remember because I am not sure how many are left, how many survived. Or if anyone did.

I hoped that I wasn’t alone.

I remembered that day.

I remembered because it was the day I became alone.

It was the day that everything was perfect until the monsters took it away. Then the house went silent and the birds stopped singing. It was the day when everyone disappeared, everyone except the boy, the only person I have seen in two years.
The boy I talk to through the glass.

Ivy Entwined

Blurb: When Ivy Callahan returns to her hometown as mayor, she doesn’t expect much to have changed. But now her ex-fiancé is the town planner, the biggest business is closed, and the only store interested in Celebration, NY is a Megamart. On top of it all, the liaison for the big, bad, box store is Marcus Weaver, her childhood crush. And he’s still as dangerously delectable as ever.
Marcus unwillingly spent his teens in Celebration with his vindictive, drunken uncle. As far as Marcus is concerned, the town’s only use is to cement his rise up the corporate ladder. He needs that Megamart opened, and Ivy is his ticket. But the sexy, stubborn mayor could also be his downfall.
As the unemployed townspeople put on the pressure, Ivy needs to do something. With a fresh downtown-renewal project in the works, Ivy could stop Marcus and his Megamart before they kill the town’s spirit. But with sparks flying between Ivy and Marcus, they each need to decide what’s more important: their careers or their hearts.

Excerpt
He blinked at her. “Who are you?”
“I’m Ivy Callahan. Who are you?”
He froze. Callahan. The mayor’s daughter? The last time he’d seen Ivy, she was a freckly kid in braces, sitting with her friends in the corner of the drugstore and giggling behind her hand. But now? Gorgeous. And probably pissed at him, despite the fact that he’d just saved her from falling on her face. He stopped, glancing behind him. Where was Alberta Fields? He needed a buffer.
Like a beacon, she walked over to them. “That was a close call, but you didn’t fall, so all’s well that ends well. Ivy, this is Marcus Weaver. Can you believe it?”
Ivy’s mouth dropped open. She turned to Alberta and whispered something in her ear. Alberta nodded.
Ivy cocked her head to the side and looked at Marcus. “Oh. Well, I’d like to speak with you. Walk into city hall with me.”
He raised an eyebrow at Alberta, who shrugged and turned to the crowd. “Inside, everybody,” she snapped out in her practiced schoolteacher voice.
Marcus followed Ivy up the steps, letting his gaze bounce over her killer legs and snug suit. Ivy Callahan. Wow. She sure had grown up.
Ivy turned, a flash of annoyance crossing her face. “You are the investor Herman’s been talking about, right?”
“Yes, but what does that have to do with…” Marcus gave her an automatic smile. “Never mind. What was with the welcome wagon back there? Are you…” He searched for an appropriate word, but he couldn’t think of anything that didn’t sound ridiculous. “Famous?”
Ivy raised an eyebrow. “Depends on who you ask.”
“I see.” Marcus crossed his arms. “In any case, where’s your dad? I’d like to speak with him before the meeting starts.”
“You would? How come?”
“Because I wanted to say hello.”
She flicked a piece of imaginary lint from her spotless red suit. “Great. I’ll let him know. Anything else you need?”
Okay, so she was pissed. But she didn’t have to interrogate him. He had saved her from falling on her ass, after all. Marcus leaned forward, not even trying to keep the hint of condescension from his voice. “Look. It’s been fun chatting with you, but I’d really like to talk to the mayor. Okay, sweetheart?”
She went still for a brief second and then a slow grin spread over her face. “Sure, honey. Go ahead and talk to the mayor. You’re looking right at her.”

Unpopular: An Unloved Ones Prequel

Unpopular: An Unloved Ones PrequelUnpopular: An Unloved Ones Prequel by Kevin Richey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Sam is the most popular boy in school. He's great looking and the local sports star. His dad pushes him to be even better with no regard to Sam's personal feelings. His mother is mousy and just goes along with whatever his dad says.

After his birthday rolls around things begin to change for Sam. He has trouble staying awake and misses his games. As a result he has a fall from grace. He is no longer popular; no longer the star of the school. As kids at school begin to bully him he starts getting angry. His anger begins to boil over into a lust for blood and pain. Instead of his parents trying to find a medical reason for his sleeping disorder they simply punish him further.

Overall, this is a great introduction to Sam and a wonderful ending as only Kevin Richey can do it. If you have enjoyed the other Unloved Ones Prequels then this one will not disappoint.

Colony East

Colony East (Toucan, #2)Colony East by Scott Cramer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.

Colony East picks up right where Night of the Purple Moon leaves off and it hits the ground running. Abbey and Jordan are on the mainland waiting for Jordan to recover enough to return home. They are hopeful that the adults that have discovered the cure will continue to help the suriving teens and children. Soon two years have passed. We see the anguish caused by death as well as seperation from growing up and going your own path.

Soon we hear that the bacteria have mutated causing a new illness without any cure or treatment. Abby, desperate to save Toucan, risks all to get her to Colony East for a cure. But what she finds there is anything but what she expects.

While this is a very believeable world with great new characters as well as past characters that have grown. There were a few things that I expected to be different. The kids that have been left are very resourceful. They have managed to start growing crops and learning to take care of livestock and learning to commercial fish however no one has learned how to start the water/sewage systems. I would have also thought that possibly the military systems left in place would have been concerned about the electrical systems as well as water. But I guess considering their train of thought concerning the catastrophy maybe not.

Overall, I enjoyed this read as well as the series so far. And the cliffhanger ending made me want to yell 'NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!' I would recommend this to any lovers of dystopia. A great series for kids as well as adults.

Si-cology 1: Tales and Wisdom from Duck Dynasty’s Favorite Uncle

Si-cology 1: Tales and Wisdom from Duck Dynasty’s Favorite UncleSi-cology 1: Tales and Wisdom from Duck Dynasty’s Favorite Uncle by Si Robertson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gotta love Uncle Si! If you are a fan of Duck Dynasty it is a must that you pick up this book.

In Si-cology Si tells about his life from his time growing up thru his years in the military and how he met his wife of over 40 years. His story is told with humor and humility and you can see the great love that he has for his family and God. Some of what was here we had heard on Duck Dynasty but much of it I had not known. We get more information about his wife and children that stay completely behind the scenes of the show. I would have loved to have seen more up to date pic of his family but I guess since they are very private people they wanted to stay out of the limelight.

I loved hearing more about how he grew up in the Robertson clan and why he made the decisions he did about college and the service. Its obvious that he takes his religion seriously but unlike Phil's book its not overly preachy. Its full of humor and great stories of his life. A fun light read that everyone should enjoy.

For standing before her—right there before her, not three feet away—was the best-looking, most gorgeous, handsomest man she had ever seen in all her life!

“No, seriously,” she thought out loud with lingering bewilderment at how perfectly stunning the man standing before her was, wearing a worn pair of Levi’s, dusty cowboy boots, and a short-sleeved, plaid-print, snap-up shirt that hung open, revealing a bronzed, perfectly sculpted torso that was simply a mass of muscles. Synopsis: Between the alien Alliance and the Terran Empire, a neutral zone stretches between the galaxies, a demilitarized zone that was established 150 years previous, following the Great War. The peace accord granted a semblance of peace to the universe. The peace, however, is a facade, and it is the responsibility of Michael Vance and his covert operations team to maintain that illusion.

Recently, the Alliance lost contact with one of their outposts near the neutral zone. Surveillance scans show an abandoned city and no signs of life. The Alliance does what it always does: send in the best. But an unexpected betrayal leaves Vance and his team stranded. Worse, the city that was supposed to be dead is quite alive. And the monsters that now roam its streets are slaughtering his team, one at a time.
